we’re mostly through june and i haven’t even gone swimming yet. summer failure.

baltimore summers were the most swim-filled. even though we had to drive 45 minutes outside of the city we would do it several times a week sometimes. in chicago we would go to the beach at least once a week but the water was never nice enough to swim.

i just realized i started doing crossfit a year ago this week.

officially way longer than i've kept up with any other work out, and the even bigger difference is that i'm more stoked about it than ever. crossfit works. you see results immediately. it's fun. there's a strong community aspect. you respect and love your coaches and they help you push yourself. you do things you never thought you would be strong enough to do.

on my first day of crossfit, in the intro class this time last year, i actually thought i was going to pass out. my eyes were going blurry during the runs. i hobbled around for four days afterward feeling like i would never not be sore again. if i did that same workout now, however, i would probably consider it an 'easy workout.'

crossfit has done so much for my confidence. when i started i was really nervous because i didn't want to work out in front of other people, i was nervous to have coaches, i was sure i wouldn't be able to finish the assigned workouts, etc. when i tell my friends about crossfit, these are all things a lot of them mention as a reason they don't want to do it. it should actually be a reason TO join. it's such a safe and friendly environment, the best way to get used to achieving fitness goals with other people. crossfit feels like a team, rather than a gym with a lot of other nameless people you'll never see again. that's one of the main things that keeps you going back. you develop an actual relationship with your gym mates, and your coaches.

since i started crossfit, i more than doubled how much i can lift overhead, going from 35 to 70 pounds. i went from back squating 75 pounds to 150. i'm faster, more agile, have way better balance, have so much more core strength, i'm flexible and stable. i'm sore all the time but never stiff from inactivity - which is a much worse way to be sore. i'm more confident, more committed, i never hit plateaus, it's never a routine. my workout goals are to be able to do a muscle up on gymnastics rings, a handstand pushup, and to chain kipping pull ups. my workout goals before were to be able to run without hyperventilating, and that's about it. i didn't even think to set goals!

i wrote this post in october with some before and after pictures from 6 months of crossfitting. it's fun to revisit after i've been doing it twice as long. http://ramseygetsbig.wordpress.com/2010/10/24/crossfit-total/

my new crossfit gym in philly has just as strong community as my old one. it's just the crossfit model i guess. i assumed before that i had lucked out by finding a gym with amazing people in it.

we're about to start a 30 day body composition challenge, starting with a nutrition seminar and body measurements.

i'm super stoked that several of my lady friends in chicago joined crossfit recently. we're all going to be tough as shit.

i feel like my weeks keep getting more and more fun these days. there is always so much to DO around these parts. i know there was a lot to do in chicago but i guess the difference is that here there is a regular friend group doing all of these things and it makes all the events/activities more enticing. in chicago half the time, you'd be going to events with different people at each one or going to events and not knowing anyone at all.

PICTURE POST! week four in philly, dollar taco night, spraynard record release show, batting cages, trip to baltimore, trip to south carolina for a dwell photoshootCollapse )
